Miles II Contemporary Quilt.
Bid as of 5/24/08: $2500

Designed by Shirley Albrecht Shank of Goshen, IN it is a linear design.  There are not curved lines in the entire quilt although the “rays” give the sense of curves.  The colors include greens, golds, blacks, beiges and plum.  This will fit in many room settings.

In the corner are the initials of Shirley Shenk, the designer, the initials MB of Mildred the piecer, and the initials MM of Miriam, the quilter.  Mildred lives in Goshen and is a Conservative Mennonite and Miriam lives at Clare, Michigan and is Amish. The quilt was completed in 2007 and that date appears as well.

When asked about the origin of the name Miles II, Dave Shenk responded as follows.  A family from another state was seeking a quilt and they had been given the advice that they should go to Goshen, to Quilt Designs to get an original.  So they came to Quilt Designs looking for a large quilt.  They indicated that they didn’t like the usual quilts; they didn’t like things that were cutesy or country, frilly or floral.  Well, Shirley spent some time talking to them and after they left sketched out three designs.  They were named Miles I, II, and III after the family name of the persons who were interested.  It turns out the Miles I was never implemented but Miles II and Miles III have become quite popular.

End Table and Folding Table
Bids as of 5/24/08:
Folding Table: $700
End Table: $200

Made by:  This end table and folding table were constructed by Elton Ulrich who was one of the first Menno Haven Board Members and has been a long-time supporter of Menno Haven.  In his senior years he has turned to a hobby of working with wood and readily agreed to make these two items for sale for the 50th Year Celebration of the ministry at Menno Haven.

Size:
End Table:  It is 28 inches long, 15 inches wide and 21 inches high.
Folding table: The top is 20 inches by 20 inches and it is 21 inches high.

Materials: These items are made from Oak lumber salvaged from Doug and Jenell Ulrich’s home located about 3/4 miles east of the Rte 116 and Rte 117 junction north of Eureka.  This home, along with the Parson’s plant located at that intersection, was destroyed in the July 2004 tornado.  Many persons helped in the salvage process by carefully removing oak trim, door and window frames, flooring etc from the house.  Over the past year or two Elton has used these materials to make small furniture pieces.
